The company was formed in 2013 in a ‘cwt’ at the end of the garden by Steffan, originally from Pontypridd, now living in Y Groeslon. The inspiration to start roasting coffee came about from time spent in Medellin, Colombia in 2003 living in a community called El Poblado. Spanish for town, or community. On returning to Wales and starting a new enterprise the name of this community was the perfect choice and reflected the ethos of the young company. With this in mind there was no better emblem to represent the community of Dyffryn Nantlle than a slate hut behind traditional slate fencing shadowed by the mountains.
A few years later after finding his feet, and welcoming Sion to the company in 2016 business expansion was bigger than space allowed for in the present location. We came across the old quarrymen barracks sheltered by the slate heaps of Nantlle, and this is where we now roast our speciality coffee to cafes across north Wales. A coincidence that the birthplace of Sion’s grandfather and a lineage of quarrymen is on our doorstep. This connection makes us proud to be contributing something to the industrial heritage of this spectacular valley.
The next steps for the company reflects the journey of slate from Nantlle down to the Slate Quay in Caernarfon. Our intention is to open a coffee shop as part of the developments on the site during the next year. We hope to introduce a variety of coffee from all over the globe to visitors who will be strolling around the regenerated historical slate port.
